✓ RM0 deposit (extended until further notice) ✓ Passport / valid ID guidance ✓ Fibre, Home WiFi, Postpaid ✓ Save up to RM500 in deposit
Waiver status: The RM0 standard foreigner deposit waiver is currently active and has been extended until further notice. This page is reviewed regularly against the latest Maxis registration guidelines.

Can foreigners apply for Maxis in Malaysia?

Yes. Foreign nationals may apply for eligible Maxis services using valid identification such as a passport. The standard foreigner deposit is currently RM0 until further notice. What matters now is checking your document type, address coverage, plan eligibility and any remaining advance payment before applying.

Important: RM0 deposit ≠ RM0 total upfront.

The standard foreigner deposit may be waived to RM0, but other items can still apply — for example a Rate Plan Advance Payment (RAP) on selected postpaid plans, device payment, installation, or first month billing. See the deposit vs RAP breakdown below before assuming there is nothing to pay.

Deposit savings

How much can foreigners save with the RM0 standard deposit waiver?

Normally, foreign applicants may be asked to pay a standard foreigner deposit before registration. With the eligible waiver — currently extended until further notice — that standard deposit is reduced to RM0. The size of the saving depends on which Maxis product family you apply for.

Maxis Home Fibre

RM300

Standard foreigner deposit waived for eligible Home Fibre plans, including 100Mbps, 300Mbps, 500Mbps, 1Gbps and selected 2Gbps availability.

Maxis 5G Home WiFi

RM300

Standard foreigner deposit waived for eligible Home WiFi plans. A good option when fibre is not available at your address but 4G/5G signal is suitable.

Maxis Postpaid

RM300

Standard foreigner deposit waived for eligible Maxis Postpaid and Maxis Unlimited Postpaid registrations.

Family Plan

RM500

The largest standard deposit saving — for eligible family plan principal registrations.

Hotlink Postpaid

RM150

Lower-entry postpaid where the standard foreigner deposit may also be waived for eligible registrations.

Simple example:

If a foreign customer applies for Maxis Home Fibre and the usual standard foreigner deposit is RM300, the waiver removes that RM300 from upfront. For an eligible family plan principal, the deposit saving can be RM500. But — see the RAP section below — separate Rate Plan Advance Payment may still apply on some postpaid plans.

Important to understand

Foreigner deposit vs Rate Plan Advance Payment (RAP)

Two different things often get confused. The page makes them clear so you know what to expect upfront.

1. Standard foreigner deposit — currently RM0

This is the one-off security deposit historically required from foreign customers (RM150 / RM300 / RM500 depending on plan family).

Status: Waived to RM0, extended until further notice.

  • Applies to: Fibre, Home WiFi, Postpaid, Family Plan, Hotlink Postpaid
  • Refundable historically — now simply not collected
  • Same treatment as Malaysian customers under the current waiver

2. Rate Plan Advance Payment (RAP) — may still apply

This is not the deposit. RAP is an advance payment of your plan's monthly fee, applied at registration on selected postpaid plans and rebated back into your bill over time.

Status by registration type:

  • New-New postpaid: RAP is auto-applied at sign-up
  • Port-In from another telco: RAP is also waived
  • Prepaid-to-Postpaid upgrade: RAP still collected manually as bill payment
What this means at the counter:

Your foreigner deposit is RM0. But if you are signing up new postpaid (not porting in), you may still be asked for RAP at the counter — that amount comes back to you as a monthly rebate on your bill, not a permanent charge. Ask your dealer to spell out the upfront total before submitting, so there are no surprises.

Eligible product types

Which Maxis plans can foreigners apply for?

The waiver covers more than one product, which gives foreign customers real flexibility — home internet, mobile line, port-in, prepaid upgrade and wireless broadband all qualify.

Product type Who it fits Standard foreigner deposit saving Important note
Maxis Home Fibre Expats, families, renters and foreign workers who need stable home internet. Up to RM300Subject to eligibility and approval. Coverage must be checked by exact address, building, block and unit.
Maxis 5G Home WiFi Foreigners staying in rental units or areas with no fibre port. Up to RM300 Signal quality matters. Best checked by location before applying.
Maxis Postpaid / Unlimited Postpaid Foreigners who need a Malaysian mobile line with a proper monthly plan. Up to RM300 RAP may still apply on new-new postpaid sign-ups (rebated back via bill). Port-in waives RAP.
Hotlink Postpaid Lower-commitment postpaid option for foreign students, workers or renters. Up to RM150 Good simpler postpaid entry before upgrading to a higher-tier Maxis plan later.
Family Plan principal Foreign families or households needing more than one line. Up to RM500 Largest deposit saving. Eligibility and selected plan still need to be checked.
Why this is better

Why this is a strong benefit for foreigners

The biggest barrier for many foreign customers is not the monthly price — it is the upfront cost, document uncertainty and fear of being rejected because they are not Malaysian citizens. This waiver removes the largest of those three.

💰

Lower upfront burden

Removing the standard foreigner deposit makes the first payment much easier, especially for students, renters and foreign workers settling into Malaysia.

  • Home Fibre deposit saving: up to RM300
  • Postpaid deposit saving: up to RM300
  • Family Plan saving: up to RM500

How to apply

How foreigners should check Maxis eligibility

To avoid wrong expectations, check the document and address first — then choose the plan.

Prepare passport or valid identification Use the document accepted for foreign national registration. Do not rely on name only.
Prepare your exact address For fibre, send a complete house address. For condo or apartment, include building name, block, floor and unit number.
Choose what you need first Home Fibre for stable home internet, Home WiFi if fibre is not available at your address, or Postpaid for a mobile line.
Confirm deposit saving and remaining upfront Check that the standard foreigner deposit is RM0, and ask what else applies — RAP on new postpaid, device payment, installation, first month billing.
Proceed only after eligibility is clear Final approval depends on Maxis checks, service availability, selected plan and current campaign terms.
